Mootatunga Angus

Mootatunga Angus was founded by John Brook and Merilyn Paxton in 1997, with the purchase of three females at the Glen Bold dispersal, a New Trend 933 daughter from Mt Hunter and three females from Te Mania.

In recent years successful embryo programs have been carried out under the direction of Lindsay Moore from Moore and Haynes Embryo Services. Fertility has been a major factor in our embryo program with donor cows producing an average of 12 to 15 embryos per head and our recipients retaining embryos at an average of 80%+.

The stud’s breeding herd consists of 50 elite females and approximately 70 embryo recipients. Donor cows are selected from these elite females and embryo recipients are hand picked from the top performing cows in our commercial herd.

All other stud females are artificially inseminated by John Pickford from Nationwide Artificial Breeders with semen from superior Australian and International Angus sires.

Rapid expansion has been accompanied by a strict culling regime. We aim to produce females who are structurally sound, moderately framed, easy calving, maternal and extremely fertile as we place great emphasis on the quality of our females. Temperament and Breedplan also play an important part in our culling and joining programs. We do not aim for extremes in any EBV’s, as we believe that extremes in one area can be quite detrimental in others. As a result you will see that most of our animals show well balanced EBV’s, and our bulls will sire birth ease, fast growing, early maturing calves.

Our stud herd gets no special treatment. It is run with the commercial herd and must excel under strict commercial conditions.

Mootatunga Angus is a spring calving herd so our Bulls are aged from 16 to 18 months at the South Australian Beef Field Days and SA Angus week in February each year. The advantages for the buyer of these younger bulls will be an additional year of joining and young bulls which are light enough to use with heifers without risk. We use a number of our bulls at fifteen months of age every year with outstanding results.

We select a small number of stud cows and heifers as well as commercial cows and heifers for our sale each year.
