History Of Gunnadoo Charolais
The Gunnadoo Charolais Stud began in 1972 and was founded by the late Des Noller. Des was impressed with the calves that arrived due to his neighbor’s ¾ Charolais bull ‘visiting’ via a boundary fence in bad repair. The Charolais calves showed superior growth and weight and Des could immediately see the advantages of keeping up this Charolais content. He actually purchased the neighbors herd soon after.
The stud began with an upgraded herd using a mix of base cows of Angus, Shorthorn, Brahman and Hereford commercial cows. Des and the youthful Gary straight out of school, began showing Prime Cattle in 1976. After winning Grand Champion Steer in Toowoomba that year, they were all encouraged to be more and more involved in these competitions using their upgraded Charolais cattle.
The success of these steers prompted the boys to keep the better ‘steers’ as bulls and these were sold annually at the Downs Charolais Breeders Group Sale in Oakey. Gary learned the hard way, through experience and as all Charolais breeders of the 70’s found out through trial and error. But soon enough the Australian Charolais type was being noticed for its cross breeding advantages.
The acquisition of ‘Campells’, a 2325 acre predominately irrigation property 80km South/West of Toowoomba in 2007 has allowed us to expand our enterprise. This property will be used in conjunction with Gunnadoo to provide us with a more diverse operation and to help safe-guard against the dry times. Campbells is just another step in the progression of the stud, towards developing more adaptable and efficient beef cattle.
Cattle breeding, youth education and in particular the development and improvement of the Charolais breed in Australia, remains the utmost importance to Gary and the family.
