About Us

Coolana Angus is run by Mark and Anna Gubbins. Although predominantly a spring calving herd, over 1000 HBR and APR cows have been joined in 2010. 300 Heifers and 500 cows have been AIed over 3 weeks and 180 embryos implanted. These calvings produce bulls for 3 annual bull sales. Two in the Autumn, one being at Coolana in Victoria and the second at Willalooka in South Australia. A Spring Bull sale is held at Coolana in September. Bulls are also sold privately.

Aim

To produce a self replacing fertile, structural sound herd that provide for the seedstock, feedlot and grass markets.

An Angus herd was founded in 1933 by Arthur Gubbins, with a Stud started in 1972 by John Gubbins. The operation is a commercially focused Angus Stud and APR herd run by Mark Gubbins.

 
Performance recording was started in 1970 in the Herd Nucleus and then the Stud. These performance figures have been processed by Breedplan and the Angus Group EBV's of the bulls are used as a guide to strict visual classing. Particular attention is paid to calving ease, while maintaining high growth rates, good muscling and carcass traits.

 
In 1998 Coolana joined forces with Dick Whale from Independent Breeding & Marketing Service to better understand their cattle and the direction that the breeding was taking. Since that time there has been a move away from using property bred bulls for breeding genetics for its clients to using 80% AI to the worlds most popular and successful genetic packages.

 
By choosing not to show cattle and concentrating on a "getting on with the job" approach to breeding, Coolana is fast developing a reputation for producing genetics which will perform well under high stocking rates. Coolana's cattle are bred to fit both the grass fed and feedlot markets.

 
AI and Backup Sires are selected for structural integrity, high growth rates combined with carcass, heavy muscling and high fertility.

 
Coolana’s cattle breeding program is mainly a spring calving operation. This has come about by meeting the modern day demand for high efficiency, ie: lower inputs and management cost.
